This weird exoskeleton adds the sensation of touch to virtual reality

Virtual reality is so much more than visuals, but most of what we’re used to seeing is little more than head-tracking and 3D imagery in a head-mounted display. For real immersion, VR is going to need to take advantage of the other senses as well. Touch and smell are just as important as sight and sound, but those are much harder problems to solve. Thankfully, a company by the name of Dexta Robotics is developing a peripheral to simulate the sensation of touch in a virtual world.

A bandage that glows while healing

Inspired by a desire to help wounded soldiers, an international, multidisciplinary team of researchers led by Assistant Professor Conor L. Evans at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) has created a paint-on, see-through, "smart" bandage that glows to indicate a wound's tissue oxygenation concentration. Because oxygen plays a critical role in healing, mapping these levels in severe wounds and burns can help to significantly improve the success of surgeries to restore limbs and physical functions. The work was published today in The Optical Society's (OSA) open-access journal Biomedical Optics Express.

Samsung 840 Evo has serious performance bug, fix coming October 15

Anandtech is reporting that Samsung will release a fix for the 840 Evo on October 15. It’s not yet clear if the company will release simultaneous fixes for the 840 or the various Evo versions that ship with other form factors like M.2 or mSATA. If you can’t wait, users have reported that DiskFresh can also bring an SSD back up to full performance, though your mileage may vary with third party tools and we recommend using them with a degree of caution. The first three-dimensional visible light invisibility cloak

Researchers at the University of Rochester are reporting that they’ve built the first invisibility cloak that works in three dimensions, viewed from a range of angles, across the full spectral range of visible light. As you can see in the photo above, and in the video below, the invisibility effect is rather effective — and, importantly, it creates very little “telltale” distortion that usually accompanies such early attempts at cloaking (the grid lines are perfectly straight and not magnified/minimized). Best of all, though: You can make this particular kind of invisibility cloak yourself!

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sell 4M units in 24 hours: Android was right about large screens

Apple has announced that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have broken all sorts of sales records, selling a combined 4 million units in their first 24 hours of pre-order availability. Both phones are now out of stock, with a re-stock time of up to a month, and it isn’t clear if the supply chain will have more units ready for September 19, when the insanity really starts. This easily beats out any previous pre-order records set by the iPhone 5 (2 million), 5S, 5C, or Galaxy S5. Is this the much belated proof that Apple was wrong about large-screen devices all along? Are 5.5-inch phablets like the iPhone 6 Plus now the future of mobile computing?

Nexus 6 leaks: 5.9-inch Moto monster with 2560×1400 display, 3200 mAh battery

It now seems likely that Google’s next Nexus smartphone will be the Motorola-made Nexus 6. Yes, as the numeral indicates, this will be a 6-inch device (or 5.9 inches to be exact, according to some sources). A recent photo of the Nexus 6 (codenamed Shamu) suggests the phone will essentially be a scaled-up version of the new Moto X (and indeed, it might be called the Nexus X instead of the Nexus 6). The Nexus 6 will have some impressive hardware specs, too, including a 2560×1440 (QHD) display and a large 3,200+ mAh battery. It should be released in October. Pricing isn’t known yet.
